A £200+ shaver… worth it or just hype?

I’ve been using the Philips Series 9000 Prestige SP9885/35 for a few weeks now, after years with cheaper Philips models and a Braun foil. I bought it during a promo, still not cheap, so I went in with pretty high expectations. At this price, I expect something that actually makes my daily shave easier, not just another gadget taking space in the bathroom.

My beard is fairly dense, grows fast, and I often leave it 3–4 days between shaves. With other electric shavers, that usually means a lot of going over the same area, especially on the neck, and some irritation if I push it. I also still use a normal wet razor when I want a really clean look, so I’m not easily impressed by “close shave” marketing claims.

With this Series 9000 Prestige, the first thing I noticed is how quiet and smooth it feels compared to my Braun and my old Philips 5000. The head glides quite easily and it doesn’t feel like it’s chewing through the hairs. On the neck and jawline, it does a clearly better job than my old shavers, with fewer missed spots and less redness afterwards.

Is it perfect? No. There are some choices that are a bit annoying, like the separate trimmer head and the reliance on the Qi pad for charging. And if you already have a good Philips 5000 or 7000, the jump in performance isn’t as massive as the price jump. But if you’re coming from an older or cheaper shaver, it’s a pretty solid upgrade that actually changes how often I’m willing to shave.

Value: premium price, good if you’re upgrading from much older gear

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Let’s be honest: this thing isn’t cheap. Around the £200+ mark (depending on promos), you’re clearly in the premium segment. The question is whether it’s worth it compared to cheaper Philips models or even a Braun 7/9 series. In my opinion, it does justify the price if you’re coming from an old or basic shaver and you shave often, because you feel the improvement in comfort and closeness every single day.

However, if you already own a recent Philips 5000 series that you’re happy with, the jump is more marginal. One Amazon reviewer summed it up well: you get about 99% of the shave from the 5000 for much less money. With the 9000 Prestige, you’re paying for that last bit of performance, the build quality, the wireless charging, and the included accessories like the nose trimmer and cleaning pod.

Ongoing costs are something to think about. Replacement heads every couple of years plus cleaning cartridges for the pod do add up. If you’re tight on budget, you can absolutely live without the pod and just rinse under the tap with a bit of soap now and then. The shaver itself doesn’t need the pod to work well. Used smartly, the cartridges will last you a while, but it’s still an extra expense compared to a simpler setup.

Overall, I’d say the value is good but not mind-blowing. You’re paying for comfort, a very close shave, and a more premium experience. If shaving is something you do almost every day and your skin is sensitive, it’s easier to justify. If you only shave twice a week and your current mid-range shaver is fine, your money might be better spent elsewhere or on a cheaper Philips model with a separate cleaning station.

Design: flashy but mostly practical

★★★★★ ★★★★★

The first impression when you pick up this model is that it looks quite premium and modern. The bright chrome brushed finish gives it a more “metal” look than the plastic feel of mid-range shavers. It’s not tiny, but it sits well in the hand and the shape works whether you’re holding it in a normal grip or twisting it to get under the jaw.

The main shaving head has the classic Philips three-rotor layout. The Ultraflex Suspension System basically means each head and the whole plate can flex and pivot around your face. In practice, it does help on curved areas: I noticed fewer passes needed around the chin and neck. The head flips open with a simple push, which makes it easy to rinse under the tap. That’s something I actually use every couple of days rather than relying only on the cleaning pod.

The handle has a clear digital display with battery percentage and icons for cleaning and travel lock. No nonsense, no tiny unreadable symbols. The three speed modes are there but, honestly, they feel very similar. I mostly leave it on the default mode and never felt I needed to change it. It remembers your last speed, but some users mentioned it defaults low; in my case it didn’t really matter, the motor has enough power either way.

On the downside, the detachable trimmer and beard styler are less convenient than a built-in pop-up trimmer. To trim sideburns or edge the beard, you have to pull off the shaving head and click on the trimmer. It works fine, but if you do that every day, it’s slightly annoying. Also, the chrome finish looks nice but will show fingerprints and water spots, so if you like things looking pristine, you’ll be wiping it a lot. Overall, the design is well thought-out and mostly practical, with a few choices that feel more like style than pure function.

Battery and charging: strong runtime, slightly weird charging choice

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Battery life is one of the strong points here. Philips claims around 3 hours total, which in practice translates to several weeks of normal use. I shave about 4 times a week and after two weeks I was still well above half charge according to the percentage display. That display is actually handy because you know exactly when you’re getting low instead of guessing from vague bars.

The Top-Spin Digital motor seems quite efficient. Even when the battery drops below 30%, I didn’t feel any real slowdown. Some older shavers start to feel weaker as they run down; this one stayed pretty consistent until it got really low. I never managed to fully drain it in one session, even when shaving a 4–5 day beard and taking my time.

Charging is where things get a bit mixed. The Qi wireless pad is convenient at home: you just drop the shaver on it, like a phone, and forget it. It also doubles as a phone charger, which is a nice bonus if you don’t already have a wireless pad. But there’s no standard USB or direct plug on the shaver, so for travel you either bring the pad (which is bulkier than a cable) or hope your hotel has a Qi pad lying around, which is unlikely. Some users won’t care, but if you travel light, it’s slightly annoying.

On the positive side, you don’t need to leave it on the charger every day. A full charge gives you plenty of shaves, so you can easily go on a week-long trip fully charged and not bother with the pad. I’d still have preferred a simple USB-C port on the handle in addition to the Qi option. Overall, battery life is excellent, charging is reliable, but the design choice around the pad makes it less flexible than it could be.

Comfort: finally less irritation, even on the neck

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Comfort is where this shaver actually justifies a good chunk of its price. I usually get some redness on the neck with foils and cheaper rotaries, especially if I shave after 2–3 days of growth. With the Series 9000 Prestige, the Hydro SkinGlide coating and the way the head moves do make a difference. The head glides over the skin more easily and I don’t feel that scratchy drag I had with my old Braun when the foil was getting tired.

Dry shaving with a 2–3 day beard is fully doable. I need maybe 5–7 minutes to get a very clean result, but I don’t have to press hard. The key thing is: I can go over the same area a few times without the skin starting to burn. On the neck, I still get a bit of sensitivity if I really overdo it, but it’s noticeably less than before. The Power Adapt Sensor that reads the hair 500x per second is one of those features you don’t “see”, but you do feel that the motor doesn’t bog down on thicker spots.

I tried it wet with foam a couple of times. It’s slightly smoother and the head slides even better, but honestly the dry shave was already comfortable enough that I don’t feel the need to use foam regularly. For morning rushes, I just use it dry. If you have very sensitive skin, using a light gel with it should be a safe combo. The blades are sharp enough that you don’t have to grind them into the skin to get a close result.

One thing that’s not ideal comfort-wise is the detachable trimmer. It trims well and doesn’t pull much, but swapping heads mid-routine is a bit of a break in the flow. Also, if you’re used to a super light travel shaver, this one feels more solid and a bit heavier, though not tiring to hold. Overall, for daily comfort, especially on tricky areas like the neck and under the jaw, it’s one of the best I’ve used so far.

Durability and maintenance: built to last, but cartridges add cost

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Philips advertises a 7-year motor and battery lifetime and around 2 years for the self-sharpening blades. Obviously I haven’t had it for 7 years, but based on the feel, it does give a solid impression. There are no creaks when you squeeze the handle, the head mechanism feels tight, and the flip-top for cleaning doesn’t feel like it’s going to snap off after a few months.

Day-to-day maintenance is pretty straightforward. After each shave, you can either pop the head open and rinse it under the tap, or every few days use the Quick Clean Pod. The pod is actually quite clever: it uses the shaver’s own motor to pump cleaning liquid through the head and then filters the gunk. After a cycle, the head is visibly cleaner and smells fresh. The downside is the price of the cleaning cartridges. They’re not crazy expensive, but if you use the pod very often, it’s an ongoing cost you feel over the year.

You can stretch the cartridges by not running a cycle after every single shave and rinsing with water in between. Some people even open the pod and refill with their own solution, but that’s at your own risk. For the blades, Philips claims about two years of life. Given how sharp they feel now and my experience with older Philips heads, that seems realistic if you clean them regularly and don’t drop the unit.

In terms of water resistance, it’s fully washable and works in the shower, so moisture shouldn’t be an issue. Just don’t expect the chrome finish to look brand new forever; it will pick up small scratches and marks over time. Overall, it feels like a shaver that will easily last several years with basic care, but you should budget for replacement heads and cleaning cartridges as part of the long-term cost.

Performance: close to a wet razor, but not a miracle jump over cheaper Philips

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Let’s talk about the shave itself. The big claim is “skin-level closeness” and up to 0.00 mm with the NanoTech DualPrecision blades and the Lift & Cut system. In real life, the result is very close – close enough that, to the touch, it’s basically on par with a decent wet shave for me. I still feel a tiny bit of roughness if I go against the grain with my fingers, but visually it looks clean and tidy, even on the jawline.

On a 1-day beard, this shaver just flies through. On a 3–4 day beard, it still handles it, but you’ll spend a bit more time and might want to trim down first if your hair is very long or curly. The 360-degree rotating blades do a good job catching hairs growing in random directions, especially around the mouth and under the chin, where other shavers often leave patches. I noticed fewer missed spots compared to my Philips 5000, especially on the sides of the neck.

Now, if you already own a Philips 5000 series: the difference is there, but it’s not night and day. I’d say you get maybe that “last 5–10%” extra in closeness and comfort, plus the nicer build, the wireless charging and the cleaning pod. If your 5000 is still in good shape, upgrading is more of a luxury than a necessity. If you’re coming from an older or basic model, the jump feels bigger and more justifiable.

The nose trimmer and beard styler are fine add-ons. The nose trimmer does its job without yanking hairs, and the beard styler with 5 length settings is decent for keeping a short beard, though it won’t replace a dedicated beard trimmer if you’re picky. Overall, the performance is high-level: fast, close, and consistent, but don’t expect magic if you already own a fairly recent mid-range Philips – it’s more refinement than revolution.

What you actually get in the box

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Out of the box, this kit is pretty loaded. You get the Series 9000 Prestige shaver itself, a nose trimmer, a beard styler head with 5 length settings, the Qi wireless charging pad, the Quick Clean Pod with one cartridge, a small cleaning brush and a pouch. It’s basically a full shaving setup, not just the razor on its own.

The shaver comes almost ready to go – mine arrived with some charge, enough for a quick test. The digital display on the handle shows the battery percentage, which is actually useful and not just a gimmick. You immediately feel it’s a more premium product than the cheaper Philips lines: the head flips open nicely, and the whole thing feels like it’s built to be opened and rinsed without drama.

The Qi charging pad is both good and slightly annoying. Good because you literally just drop the shaver on it and it charges, and it also works for my phone. Annoying because if you travel light or forget the pad, there’s no simple USB-C plug on the shaver to charge it directly. You’re basically married to this pad or another Qi charger, which is less convenient than a normal cable in a travel bag.

The Quick Clean Pod is a nice extra. You click the shaver in (turned on), it runs a cleaning cycle using the built-in motor to pump cleaning solution around the blades. It does get the head quite clean with almost no effort, but the cartridges are not cheap, so you have to factor that into the long-term cost. Overall, the package feels complete and high-end, but some choices are more “cool” than practical, especially if you move around a lot.

Pros

  • Very close and comfortable shave, even on 2–3 day growth and sensitive neck areas
  • Quiet, powerful motor with long battery life and clear percentage display
  • Flexible head and sharp blades catch hairs in different directions with fewer missed spots

Cons

  • High price compared to Philips 5000 series for a relatively small real-world improvement
  • Qi pad charging is less practical for travel and there’s no direct USB charging
  • Cleaning pod cartridges and future replacement heads add noticeable ongoing cost

Conclusion

★★★★★ ★★★★★

After using the Philips Series 9000 Prestige SP9885/35 for a few weeks, I can say it’s a very capable high-end shaver that actually delivers on the two main points that matter: closeness and comfort. On my skin, it gets very close to what I’d get from a wet razor, without the cuts and with much less irritation, especially on the neck. The flexible head, the sharp NanoTech blades and the Hydro SkinGlide coating all contribute to a shave that feels smooth rather than scratchy, even on a 2–3 day beard.

The extras are a mixed bag. The Qi charging pad is nice at home but less handy for travel. The cleaning pod is clever and keeps the head very clean, but the cartridges add ongoing cost. The detachable trimmer and beard styler work fine but are less convenient than a built-in trimmer for quick touch-ups. Build quality feels solid and the battery life is strong, so it should last years if you look after it.

Who is it for? If you shave often, have a dense or tricky beard, and want something that’s genuinely comfy on the skin, this model makes sense, especially if you’re upgrading from an older or cheap shaver. If you already have a recent Philips 5000 or similar, the improvement is there but not massive, and you might feel the price difference more than the performance jump. In short: a very good premium shaver that gets the job done really well, but not the best value if you’re already in the Philips ecosystem with a decent mid-range model.
