A mid-range shaver that mostly does what it says
I’ve been using the Braun Series 7 72-N1200si for a few weeks now, swapping it in for my usual cheap rotary shaver and the odd manual razor when I can be bothered. I’m not a grooming nerd, I just want something that gives me a clean face before work without chewing up my skin or taking 20 minutes. On paper this thing ticks a lot of boxes: wet & dry, 60‑minute battery, made in Germany, and a flexible head that’s meant to follow the contours of your face.
In day-to-day use, I’d say it’s a pretty solid shaver, but not perfect. It does give a close shave, definitely closer than my older Philips rotary and quicker than faffing about with foam and a manual blade. But some of the marketing around the 360° head and the different modes sounds fancier than it feels in real life. Yes, it moves, yes, it adjusts, but it’s not like your shaving routine suddenly becomes magic.
What stood out most to me is how gentle it is on the skin. I’ve got slightly sensitive skin on the neck, and with some shavers I end up with red patches and that burning feeling. With this Braun, even dry shaving in a rush, irritation stayed pretty low. Not zero, but better than average. The turbo mode is handy when you’re in a hurry, but I mostly left it on standard because it already cuts fast enough.
It’s not all good though. The trimmer being a separate attachment is a bit of a pain if you like to tidy sideburns or a moustache mid-shave. Also, the price is on the higher side for what is basically a solid, mid-range shaver. If you expect something life-changing because of the “Series 7” name, you might be slightly underwhelmed. But if you just want a reliable, comfortable shave and can live with a couple of small annoyances, it gets the job done.
Value for money: fair, but not a crazy bargain
On price, the Braun Series 7 72-N1200si sits in that mid-to-upper range. It’s not the cheapest shaver out there, and it’s below the top-end models with cleaning stations and loads of accessories. For what you get – a solid foil shaver, decent case, trimmer attachment, and strong battery – I’d call the value “good but not mind-blowing”. You’re mainly paying for the Braun name, the German build, and the comfort/close shave combo.
If you’re switching from disposable razors, you’ll probably notice the savings over time. Blades and foam add up quickly, especially if you shave daily. Here, your main running cost is eventually replacing the foil and cutter, which might be every 1–1.5 years depending on how often you shave. So in the long run, it can work out cheaper and more convenient, especially if you’re sick of constantly buying cartridges.
Compared to cheaper electric shavers, what you’re really getting for the extra money is better comfort and a closer shave, plus the wet/dry and waterproof features. If you only shave twice a week and don’t care much about a super close finish, a cheaper model might be enough. But if you shave almost every day and want something that doesn’t wreck your skin, then the price starts to make more sense. The Which? recommendation mentioned in one of the user reviews lines up with how it feels: not luxury, but solid value for a daily driver.
The only thing that slightly annoys me for the price is the lack of extras: no cleaning station, no extra guards, no foil cap. Also, the fact that one Amazon reviewer got theirs in a plain brown box would make me double-check the seller, because at this price I expect proper Braun packaging. Overall though, if you buy it from a reliable seller and plan to use it regularly, I’d say the value is decent. Not a steal, but a sensible purchase if you want to stop wasting money on disposables and you care more about performance than gadgets.
Design: practical, a bit plasticky, but comfortable in hand
Design-wise, the Braun Series 7 72-N1200si is pretty typical Braun: black, slightly curved body, foil head on top. It doesn’t look cheap, but it also doesn’t look high-end like some metal-bodied shavers. Most of it is plastic with some rubberized areas on the sides and back for grip. In the hand, it feels light but not flimsy. I never felt like I’d drop it, even when using it in the shower with wet hands.
The star feature they keep pushing is the 360° SkinFlex head. In reality, it means the shaving head tilts and pivots in a bunch of directions, and the three flexing blades move independently. In use, you do feel it hugging the jawline and chin better than older fixed-head shavers. On the neck, it helps a bit, but you still need to do short strokes and change angles to catch all the stubborn hairs. So it helps, but it doesn’t magically shave every awkward hair in one pass.
The buttons and interface are simple. There’s a power button and a mode button for Turbo, Standard, and Gentle. You get a small LED indicator for battery level and mode, nothing complicated. I like that, because I don’t need an app or a screen on a shaver. The downside is that the mode button is easy to forget about; after a while I mostly just left it on Standard and didn’t touch it. The Gentle mode is nice if your skin is a bit irritated, but it also feels slightly slower.
My only design complaints are fairly minor: the separate trimmer attachment feels like an afterthought, and the shaver doesn’t stand perfectly stable upright on its own because of the curved base – it can topple if you knock the sink. Also, there’s no protective cap for the foil, which I’d like for travel. Still, overall, the design is practical, ergonomic, and clearly built to be used wet or dry without worrying about slipping. It’s not flashy, but it does the job comfortably.
Battery life: genuinely good and low-maintenance
The battery is one of the strong points of this Braun Series 7. It’s rated for up to 60 minutes of cordless use, and that matches pretty well with my experience. I shave for about 5–7 minutes most mornings, and I easily got close to two weeks before needing to recharge. The battery indicator isn’t super detailed, but it gives you a rough idea so you’re not caught out with a dead shaver unexpectedly.
Charging is straightforward: plug the 2‑pin charger into the bottom and leave it on the counter. A full charge takes around an hour. There’s also a 5‑minute quick charge, which I actually tested one morning when I forgot to plug it in. I left it charging while I brushed my teeth and got a quick enough boost for a full shave. That feature alone is pretty handy if you’re forgetful like me and don’t want to stand there waiting half an hour.
One thing to know: this shaver is designed to be cordless only for safety reasons because it’s fully waterproof. So you can’t use it plugged in. If the battery is dead, you’re not shaving until it has at least a bit of charge. For me that’s not a big issue because the battery life is long enough that I just plug it in every week and don’t think about it. But if you’re used to older corded shavers, that’s a change.
Overall, I’d say the battery performance is more than enough for normal use. Travelling with it is easy because you don’t need to bring the charger for a weekend or even a short business trip. As long as you remember to charge it now and then, it’s basically a non-issue. No weird battery drain, no sudden shutdowns mid-shave so far. For this price range, battery life and charging speed are definitely on the positive side.
Comfort and skin irritation: good, especially on the neck
I’ve got slightly sensitive skin, especially on the neck and under the jaw, so comfort is a big deal for me. With some cheaper shavers I get that burning sensation and red patches that last a couple of hours. With this Braun Series 7, irritation was noticeably lower. Not zero, but definitely more comfortable than my old rotary and also a bit better than an older Braun I had years ago.
Dry shaving is where I used it the most. On a 1–2 day beard, I can go over the same area a few times without feeling like my skin is being scraped. The foils glide fairly smoothly, and the flexible head means you don’t have to press as hard, which also helps reduce irritation. On the neck, I still had to do shorter strokes and change directions, but the redness after was milder and usually gone in 30–40 minutes, not half a day.
Wet shaving in the shower was even more comfortable. Using a bit of gel or foam with it makes it glide better and almost completely kills that post-shave burn for me. The downside is that it’s a bit slower and messier, but if you struggle with irritation, it’s a decent option. The Gentle mode is also useful if your skin is having a bad day. It feels a touch weaker, but you notice less tugging on the neck and under the chin. I used Gentle mode when I’d already shaved the previous day and just wanted a quick tidy-up.
Overall, I’d rate comfort as one of the strong points of this shaver. If your skin is super sensitive, you might still get some redness, but for most people I think it will be fine, especially if you use it regularly and don’t let the beard grow too long. It’s not magic, but compared to disposable razors that often nick and cut, this feels safer and more forgiving day to day.
Build quality and durability: feels solid, but time will tell on the foil
In terms of build quality, the Braun Series 7 72-N1200si feels solid enough for a mostly plastic device. There are no weird creaks when you squeeze it, the head mechanism feels firm, and the buttons haven’t loosened up after a few weeks of daily use. The waterproofing also seems legit – I’ve rinsed it under the tap after every shave and used it in the shower a few times, and there’s been no sign of water getting inside or any issues starting up afterwards.
The foil and cutter block are the parts I’m always suspicious about on any electric shaver, because that’s what usually wears out first. So far, the foils look fine and still cut efficiently. Braun usually recommends replacing them roughly every 18 months, depending on use. From the feel of it, I’d say that’s realistic. If you press too hard or drop it, you can damage the foil, but that’s the same story with every foil shaver. I’d have liked a protective cap in the box to avoid accidental damage when throwing it in a bag.
What I do like is that it’s easy to clean: you just pop off the head, tap out the hairs, and run it under water. The included little brush helps get stubborn hairs out of the corners. Because there’s no cleaning station with this model, you’re responsible for keeping it maintained, but honestly it takes one minute tops. I’ve not noticed any rust, discolouration, or weird noises developing so far.
Long-term, I expect the plastic body to hold up fine as long as you don’t drop it on tile regularly. The biggest ongoing cost will be replacement foils and cutters, which is normal for this type of shaver. So I’d say durability seems decent: not tank-like, but good enough that you should get a few years out of it if you don’t abuse it and remember to change the foil when it starts losing performance.
Shaving performance: close and quick, especially for daily use
On the performance side, this Series 7 is pretty strong for everyday shaving. On a 1‑day or 2‑day beard, it gives a close shave in about 3–5 minutes for me. I mainly used it dry in the morning, sometimes with a splash of water or a bit of gel on weekends. Compared to my older rotary shaver, it’s clearly closer and faster, especially around the cheeks and upper lip. I don’t need to go over the same spot as many times, which is a big plus when you’re half awake.
Where it struggles a bit is with 3+ days of growth. It can handle it, but you need more passes and you sometimes feel it tug slightly on longer hairs, especially under the chin. In those cases, I found it easier to quickly run the precision trimmer first to knock the beard down, then finish with the foil. It’s not ideal, but that’s pretty normal for most foil shavers – they’re happier when you use them regularly rather than once a week.
The three modes are more subtle than the marketing suggests. Turbo mode does feel a bit more aggressive and a bit louder, and it clears a 2‑day beard slightly faster. Gentle mode slows things down and feels softer on the skin, which is nice if you’ve shaved twice in a day or if your neck is already irritated. But honestly, Standard mode is the one I stuck with 90% of the time. It’s the best balance between speed and comfort, and after a while you kind of forget the other two exist.
In terms of closeness, I’d rate it like this: not quite as baby-smooth as a fresh manual razor with foam, but close enough that nobody will notice unless they run their fingers against the grain. Around the neck there are always a few flat hairs that take extra work, but that’s been true with every shaver I’ve owned. Overall, for daily or every-other-day shaving, performance is solid. If you expect it to mow down a full week’s beard in one go, you might be a bit disappointed, but used regularly it gets the job done with less hassle than blades.
What you actually get in the box
Out of the box, the Braun Series 7 72-N1200si feels like a straightforward kit rather than some huge grooming station. In my package, I got: the shaver itself, a soft travel case, the 2‑pin charger, a small cleaning brush, and the clip-on precision trimmer attachment. That’s it. No cleaning station, no stand, no fancy extras. Personally, I don’t mind – less plastic clutter in the bathroom – but if you’re used to the versions with a Clean & Charge station, this feels a bit barebones.
The travel case is decent. It’s semi-rigid, zips up fine, and fits the shaver snugly. It’s not premium leather or anything like that, but it protects the shaver in a bag and doesn’t feel cheap. You can tell Braun focused more on function than looks here. The charger is a basic 2‑pin plug, which is standard for bathroom sockets in the UK. If you want to plug it into a normal 3‑pin wall socket, you’ll need an adapter. Not a drama, but something to know before you throw away all your adapters.
One thing that bugged me a bit: the trimmer being separate. It’s a small plastic attachment that you clip on instead of having a pop-up trimmer built into the shaver head. It works fine, but it’s another bit you can lose in a drawer. I’d rather have a built-in one that slides up, like on some older Braun models. Also, there are no extra foils or protective caps included, just the bare minimum.
Overall, the presentation is functional. It doesn’t feel like a cheap knock-off, but it also doesn’t scream luxury. If you just want a shaver ready to go with the basics – shaver, case, charger, small trimmer – it covers that. If you were expecting a more complete grooming set with guards, stands and loads of attachments, this isn’t that. It’s more of a straight-up foil shaver kit with one add-on trimmer and not much else.

- Comfortable shave with low irritation, especially for daily use
- Good battery life with true 60 minutes runtime and handy 5-minute quick charge
- Waterproof and works well both dry and with gel/foam in the shower
Cons
- Separate trimmer attachment is easy to lose and less convenient than a built-in trimmer

Conclusion
Editor's rating
After using the Braun Series 7 72-N1200si regularly, my overall take is that it’s a solid, no-nonsense electric shaver that does most things well without being perfect. The shave is close enough for work or going out, especially if you use it daily or every other day. Comfort is good, particularly on the neck, and the waterproof design plus strong battery make it easy to fit into any routine, whether you shave at the sink or in the shower.
This shaver is a good fit if you: shave often, have slightly sensitive skin, and want something reliable that doesn’t require foam every morning. It’s also a decent choice if you travel a bit and want a cordless shaver with a battery you don’t have to baby-sit. If you’re moving from disposables, you’ll probably enjoy the convenience and the long-term savings once you get used to it.
On the flip side, if you only shave once or twice a week and have thick, coarse hair, you might find it takes more passes than you’d like. The separate trimmer attachment can also be annoying if you use a trimmer a lot. And for the price, the lack of extras like a cleaning station or more attachments may feel a bit barebones to some people. Overall, I’d rate it as a good, reliable mid-range shaver: it gets the job done with decent comfort and performance, even if it doesn’t feel like anything special or flashy.
