Philips Norelco I9000 Prestige Ultra Review: a pricey smart shaver that actually shaves really close

I’ve been using the Philips Norelco I9000 Prestige Ultra (XP9403/88) for a few weeks now, rotating it with my usual cartridge razor and an older Braun foil shaver. I’m not sponsored, I paid real money for it, and I’ll be blunt: it’s a very good shaver, but it’s also expensive and a bit overcomplicated with the app and all the AI talk. If you’re expecting magic, relax. If you want a very close, comfortable electric shave, then we’re getting somewhere.

My beard is on the thick side, especially on the chin and neck, and my skin gets red fast if a shaver tugs or overheats. I usually shave every 2–3 days, sometimes I push it to 4–5 just to see if a device can actually handle longer stubble. With this one, I tried everything: dry shave, quick wet shave in the shower, and shaving cream with the rotary heads.

What stood out right away is how close it gets compared to most electrics I’ve tried. It’s not 100% razor-blade level on every single spot, but it’s close enough that I didn’t feel prickly an hour later like with cheaper electrics. Neck and jawline, which are usually the weak spots, were surprisingly clean after a bit of practice with circular motions and going against the grain on the neck.

But it’s not perfect. The app requirement to change modes is annoying, the missing wall charger out of the box is cheap for this price, and the whole AI/pressure thing is nice at first but quickly feels like a gimmick once you know how to shave. I’ll break down what worked well for me and what felt like overkill, so you can decide if it’s worth the cash or if a mid-range shaver will do the same job for you.

Let’s talk money, because that’s really the sticking point with this thing. The I9000 Prestige Ultra sits at the high end of the electric shaver market. You can definitely find decent shavers for half or even a third of the price. So the question is: are you actually getting enough extra performance and comfort to justify it? In my experience, yes, but only if you really care about close, comfortable shaves and you’ll use it often.

The pros in terms of value: it shaves very close, handles 2–4 day stubble well, is comfortable on sensitive areas, is fully waterproof, and comes with a full kit (trimmer, nose trimmer, cleaning pod, travel case). If you’re coming from a mid-range rotary or a cheap foil and you shave several times a week, you will likely notice the difference in both closeness and comfort. For someone who has been struggling with irritation or patchy results, that’s worth something.

On the downside, some of what you pay for is fluff. The AI, Bluetooth, and app tracking are cool for about a week, and then most people will forget about them. The fact that you need the app to change some shave modes is just annoying. The missing power adapter feels like cost-cutting on a premium product. And you’ve got ongoing costs: cleaning cartridges, replacement heads, possibly even a charger if you don’t want to mess with support.

So in terms of value, I’d put it like this: if you catch it on sale or you’re someone who shaves often, has coarse or tricky hair, and wants something that’s genuinely close to a blade without the hassle, the price is easier to swallow. If you only shave once a week or you’re fine with “good enough,” a cheaper Norelco Series 7000 or a mid-range Braun will probably be perfectly fine and save you a chunk of cash.

In the hand, the I9000 Prestige Ultra feels like a high-end gadget. The body has a solid weight to it without being tiring, and the grip is slightly textured so it doesn’t feel slippery even with wet hands. The white-gold finish is more “nice appliance” than bling, which I actually prefer. The head is compact for a triple rotary, and that helps a lot under the nose and around the jaw. Compared to older bulky Norelcos, this one is easier to maneuver in tight spots.

The 360° flexing heads do what they say: they pivot and tilt enough to stay in contact on the neck and along the jawline. You still have to help it with your free hand by stretching the skin a bit, but that’s normal. I didn’t feel like the head was too big or clumsy, which is something I dislike on some other rotary shavers. The compact head is honestly one of the strong points of the design, especially if you have tricky areas like a bony chin or deep jaw corners.

The display and the LED ring are where the “AI” and “smart” stuff lives. You get live feedback on pressure and motion: if you press too hard, it warns you; if your motion is off, it nudges you. At first it’s interesting, especially if you’re new to electric shaving, but after a week I more or less ignored it and just shaved. It’s not bad; it’s just not something you really need once you’re used to it. The same goes for the GroomTribe app: it’s neat seeing tracking and tips, but I don’t want to open an app to change from sensitive to intense mode.

One design downside: the power button and interface are easy to hit, but not so easy that you’ll turn it on by accident. However, the fact that advanced settings live in the app instead of directly on the shaver is a weird choice. If I’m traveling or just don’t feel like pairing Bluetooth, I’d rather have a physical button to cycle through the 5 modes. So, design-wise: good ergonomics, good head size, slightly overdesigned on the software side.

Battery life on the I9000 Prestige Ultra is pretty solid. Philips claims roughly a week, and in real use that’s not far off. I shave about every other day, 5–7 minutes per shave, and I got around two weeks before I felt the need to recharge, with the battery still showing around 20–30%. That’s roughly an hour or so of actual shaving time, which lines up with what other users are saying. I never had it die mid-shave, and it doesn’t seem to lose power suddenly as it runs low.

Charging is via USB-A cable that plugs into the bottom of the shaver or into the charging stand. The annoying part: there is no power adapter in the box. For a premium product, that feels cheap. Yes, everyone has spare phone chargers, but at this price point they should have thrown one in. Some users mentioned Philips will send a charger if you go through their process, but honestly, that’s hassle that shouldn’t be necessary.

The charging stand is more about convenience and looks than function. It works fine: you drop the shaver in and it charges, and you get some nice lights. It’s handy to keep the shaver upright and drying if you shave wet. But it’s not essential; you can just plug the cable straight in. The stand is also a bit bulky for travel, so I usually leave it at home and just pack the shaver and cable in the travel case.

For travel, the battery is good enough that you can easily go on a week-long trip without bringing the charger if you start at 100%. The travel case is sturdy and holds the shaver and cable. No complaints there. So overall: battery life is good, charging is simple, but the missing wall adapter is a clear downside for a device in this price range.

On comfort, this shaver is one of the best I’ve used, especially for a rotary. The Hydro SkinGlide coating is basically a slick layer on the rings that reduces friction. In practice, on my face, that means less of that “sandpaper drag” feeling you sometimes get with dry electric shaving. I can go over the same area a few times without feeling like my skin is heating up too much, which is where cheaper shavers usually start to irritate.

Dry shaving: for me, it’s good but not perfect. On a 1–2 day beard, dry works fine and is quick. On 3+ days, dry is still okay but I feel a bit more resistance, especially on the neck where hair grows in different directions. I didn’t get much pulling, but I did get some light redness the first couple of uses until I adapted my technique and used gentler circular motions. Using a pre-shave lotion or something like Lectric Shave helped glide and reduced missed hairs, especially on the neck.

Wet shaving is where this thing really feels comfortable. With foam or gel, it glides very easily and irritation drops a lot. I tried it in the shower and at the sink; both worked well. With shaving cream, I got the closest and most comfortable results, especially on my sensitive neck. Only downside is you lose some of the speed advantage of dry shaving because you’re now dealing with lather and rinsing. But if your skin gets angry easily, this combo is probably the sweet spot.

The pressure sensor and motion feedback are nice training wheels. When I pressed too hard, it lit up and nudged me to ease up, which does help reduce irritation. After a week, my skin had basically adjusted, and I could do a full shave with minimal redness and no razor burn. So on the comfort front: very solid, especially for people with sensitive areas, but don’t expect zero irritation if you always dry shave fast on a three-day beard.

Durability is a bit hard to judge in just a few weeks, but I can at least talk about build quality and how it feels compared to other shavers I’ve owned. The body feels solid with no creaks, and the head mechanism opens and closes with a firm, precise click. The plastic doesn’t feel thin or hollow. I’ve rinsed it under the tap after almost every use, used it in the shower a couple of times, and there’s been no sign of water sneaking into weird places or any corrosion on the metal parts so far.

The 100% waterproof claim seems legit. I’ve used it with hot water and foam, then popped the head open and rinsed the inside thoroughly. Hair doesn’t get stuck in strange corners; it all ends up in the main chamber and rinses out easily. The Quick Clean Pod helps keep the internal mechanism cleaner and lubricated, which should help the blades and motor last longer. Obviously, that means buying replacement cleaning cartridges, so you’re trading some ongoing cost for lower maintenance.

Blades are stainless steel and rated for long use, but like any electric shaver, you’ll eventually need to replace the heads. Philips usually recommends around 12–24 months depending on use. Given how sharp they feel now and how efficiently they cut, I’d expect them to last at least a year of regular shaving before you notice a drop-off. Replacement heads won’t be cheap, and that’s part of the long-term cost of this model.

Philips mentions a warranty of up to 7 years, which is reassuring, even if you never actually need to use it. Between the sturdy feel, waterproof design, and the cleaning system, I’d say this is built to last better than budget shavers, but you’re also locked into the Philips ecosystem for heads and cleaning cartridges. If you hate ongoing costs, that’s something to think about.

Performance-wise, this is where the I9000 Prestige Ultra justifies most of its price. The Triple Action Lift & Cut system and NanoTech blades are mostly marketing terms, but the end result is what matters: it cuts very close and handles longer growth better than most electrics I’ve tried. I tested it on 1-day, 3-day, and once on about 5–6 days of growth just to push it. On 1–3 days, it mowed through without pulling. On 5–6 days, it still worked but needed more passes and a bit of patience, which is normal.

Compared to my older Braun foil, this Norelco does better on multi-day stubble and on the neck. The rotary heads follow the curves more easily and don’t miss as many random hairs on the jawline. Under the nose, I had to angle it a bit and use the edge of the head, but it still did a decent job. I rarely had to grab a manual razor to clean up, except when I wanted a perfectly sharp line on the edges of my goatee; for that, a manual razor or the beard trimmer attachment is more precise.

Speed of shave is decent. Once I got used to it, a full face and neck shave took me about 5–7 minutes, depending on how fussy I was being. That’s faster than my regular razor routine (shower, lather, shave, rinse) and slightly faster than my old electric since I needed fewer repeat passes. The heads don’t clog easily, and the motor doesn’t bog down even when I push it on thicker areas like the chin.

In short: it gets the job done very well. It’s not magic, you still need to learn the right circular motion and go against the grain on neck hair, but once you dial it in, you can get very close results that are honestly in the same ballpark as a blade for day-to-day use. If your beard is very coarse and you usually shave every 2–3 days, this thing handles that scenario much better than most mid-range shavers I’ve used.

Out of the box, the I9000 Prestige Ultra feels like a complete kit rather than just a shaver. You get the shaver itself, the 5+1 precision beard styler attachment, a separate nose trimmer, the charging stand, the Quick Clean Pod with one cleaning cartridge, a premium travel case, a cleaning brush, and a USB-A cable. What you don’t get is a power adapter, which is pretty stingy at this price. You can plug it into any USB charger, but still, for this kind of money, a brick should be in the box.

The shaver is a rotary type with three heads. It’s fully waterproof, so you can use it dry, with foam, or in the shower. The model I have is the white-gold color, which looks clean and modern, but more importantly, it doesn’t show fingerprints too badly. The display is full-color and shows battery percentage, cleaning reminders, and the shave mode, which is actually useful once you stop playing with it and just stick to one or two modes you like.

The Quick Clean Pod is basically a small dock with cleaning fluid that vibrates and flushes out the hair and lubricates the blades. I used it almost every other shave. It genuinely cuts down on maintenance: I still pop the head open and rinse it under water, but the pod clears out the fine dust-like hair that usually builds up inside electric shavers. Replacement cartridges will add to the running cost though, so keep that in mind.

Overall, as a package, it’s pretty solid. You’ve got everything you need for face, beard shaping, and nose hair. The only thing that feels half-baked is the charger situation and the fact that to fully use all the features (like custom modes), you need to pair it to the GroomTribe app via Bluetooth. So the hardware kit is generous, but the experience is split between a good physical product and software you may or may not care about.
